TR-8S Ultimate Guide
Let’s take a look at copying Patterns, Kits and Variations in the TR-8S.
Contributed by Alexander Marlowe for Roland Corporation Australia

To copy a Pattern:

  1. Press the Copy Button to view the Copy Screen.
  2. Turn the Value Knob to select Pattern and press Enter.
  3. Turn the Value Knob to select the Source Pattern to copy from and press Enter.
  4. Turn the Value Knob to select the Destination Pattern to copy to and press Enter.
  5. The Display shows “Pattern Copy?” Press Enter again to confirm.

An empty Pattern Number shows in the upper left of the Display as “————“ when you turn the Value Knob to select a Destination Pattern.

The TR-8S comes loaded with 84 Kits that cover a broad range of genres. There are 128 memory slots for Kits, so slots 85 and up are available for you to store your own Kit creations.

Keep in mind more than one Pattern can use the same Kit, so if you modify an existing Kit, it may change the way other Patterns sound that use that same Kit. For this reason it’s a good idea to copy the Kit you’re going to edit to a blank Kit number before you make changes to it.

To copy a Kit:

  1. Press the Copy Button to view the Copy Screen.
  2. Turn the Value Knob to select Kit and press Enter.
  3. Turn the Value Knob to select the Source Kit to copy and press Enter.
  4. Turn the Value Knob to select the Destination Kit to copy into and press Enter.
  5. The Display shows “Kit Copy?” Press Enter again to confirm.

An empty Kit Number shows in the upper left of the Display as “————“ when you turn the Value Knob to select a Destination Pattern.

The TR-8S Variation Buttons [A-H] give you access to 8 Variations per Pattern. These Variations can be used for different sections of your song. They can also add life and movement to a single groove where each Variation contains subtle or dramatic changes to your arrangement. For more info about the use of Variations in performances, take a look at the article in this series called ‘Performing in INST PLAY Mode’.

To copy a Variation:

  1. Press the Copy Button to view the Copy Screen.
  2. Turn the Value Knob to select Variation and press Enter.
  3. Turn the Value Knob to select the Source Pattern to copy from and press Enter.
  4. Press a Variation Button to select the Source Variation to copy from and press Enter.
  5. Turn the Value Knob to select the Destination Pattern to copy to and press Enter.
  6. Press a Variation Button to select the Destination Variation to copy to and press Enter.
  7. The Display shows “Variation Copy?” Press Enter again to confirm.

Pro Tip

You can use Variations for sections of a song. For example, Variation A for Intro, Variation B for First Verse, C for First Chorus, D for Second Verse, etc.

If you’re creating forms of Electronic Dance Music, you might think more along the lines of Variation A for Intro, Variation B for Breakdown, C for Buildup, D for Drop, etc.

One approach might be to start with your basic groove in Variation A, then copy Variation A to B and make changes in B for use on the next section of your song. Try holding one of the Instrument Select Buttons, and pressing the Clear Button to erase a given Instrument from the Variation you just copied. Then re-record that Instrument to suit the new section.
